MAHTOMEDI PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
The Public Works facility for the City of Mahtomedi is a comprehensive 29,200-square-foot structure that includes several specialized areas. These spaces comprise approximately 4,000 square feet dedicated to vehicle maintenance, 16,500 square feet for vehicle storage, 1,700 square feet for shop space, and an additional 7,000 square feet for general office areas, locker rooms, storage, and multipurpose functions.
Incorporating numerous green building features, the facility is designed with sustainability in mind. The surrounding old-growth forest has been largely preserved to maintain the natural landscape, and the existing building on site will be repurposed for cold storage. Sustainable design choices include the use of pervious pavements to reduce stormwater runoff, Low-E insulated glass to improve energy efficiency, and a “living wall” green screen, which will help regulate cooling costs during warmer months. In addition, the facility integrates a stormwater retention system and maximizes natural light through the use of Solatube skylights, contributing to a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly environment.
