LEBANON CEMETERY CEREMONY SHELTER
Oertel Architects was selected to design a cemetery shelter for Lebanon Cemetery in Apple Valley, MN, as part of a public/private partnership with a private donor closely connected to the cemetery. This personal affiliation brought a deep sense of respect and responsibility to the design process. The team's focus was to create a nondenominational structure, open to all, that encourages reflection without incorporating specific religious or cultural symbols. The shelter is available for memorial services and general use, reflecting the diverse traditions within the community.
Accessibility was also a key consideration. Given the cemetery's organic layout and historical growth, creating accessible paths required regrading and careful planning. The shelter’s limited fixed seating adheres to ADA standards, ensuring inclusivity. Although the project initially exceeded the budget, the design team worked with the city and donor to find a balance between scope adjustments and additional funding, resulting in a structure that aligns with the project’s vision and needs.
