ORONO PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
Orono, Minnesota
Project type: New construction
Size: 60,000 square feet
Completion: Anticipated Spring 2024
The City of Orono hired Oertel Architects to provide design services for its new Public Works campus. The project includes a full-service public works building (vehicle storage, vehicle maintenance, office, shop, and support), exterior covered storage bins, exterior open storage bins, a salt building, a brine building, and a fuel island.
The site was formerly owned by MnDOT and is located off of Old Crystal Bay Road, immediately adjacent to Highway 12. Steeply sloped, long and linear, and adjacent to residential; the site poses a few challenges. The design team worked with staff, council, easement holders, and neighbors to design a campus that satisfied these unique requirements while maintaining operational efficiency.
